Ethics Policy

Draft for the editor to review and adopt before launch.

Accuracy

We verify what we publish and tell readers where information comes from. When we get something wrong, we correct it openly on the story and on our corrections page.

Independence

Advertisers, donors and officials do not decide what we cover or how we cover it. We disclose any relationship that a reasonable reader would want to know about.

Fairness

We give people and institutions a meaningful chance to respond before we publish claims about them.

Sources

We name sources whenever we can. We grant anonymity only when a source faces real risk and the information matters to the public, and we explain that decision to readers.

Opinion

Opinion pieces are labeled and kept separate from news reporting.
